Thanks to a few firms who do extensive research and adopt safe SEO practices and present with unique strategies that makes your website race past the competitors. However, to get a maximum reach to their services, the use the word "cheap" as well. So, let’s come to the topic – when a SEO company says “Cheap” what do they mean by it? None of the service provider is going to sacrifice their profits and offer cheap services. There are a very few cases where the profits are sacrificed and services are offered so that the cheap service would act as an entry point in to a whole world of other SEO services. You are in trouble if the freelancer is a crooked person hunting for more money and takes up jobs even if he knows he cannot complete it. They simply use the word cheap and take the job. I think you still get what you pay for. Automation is no longer the first go to answer for good SEO. It use to be but things have changed. There are fewer avenues for automated software so when you use it be very careful it is within Google's scope of acceptance and you're not trying to fool Google for higher rankings. Which brings up the subject of doing your due diligence when hiring an SEO company. Check them out on the Internet including any reviews and articles they have written. See where they rank for 20 or 30 keywords. If they are on the first 2 pages, they know what they're doing. Don't ask for references. I don't give them. Why? Think about it. If I get you on the first page of Google do you want your competition knowing what I do to get you there. Of course not and don't say otherwise. Have I lost some deals due to this. Absolutely. Do I care? Absolutely not. Don't get me wrong. I like cheap for certain areas of life but when it comes to surgery, legal and tax matters and yes, SEO, I suggest you pass cheap and pay for experience.
