DMCA takedown requests would harm site’s rankings

DMCA logoNow we’re talking! Google has become more transparent with their algorithm updates by revealing the newest search engine ranking factor to the public. The addition of DMCA takedowns as a signal to de-rank a website is the latest addition that is revealed. This is good news for everyone who publishes unique content and works online while it is grim news for who copy others work. According to Google, sites would lose rankings based on the number of DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) of take down requests they receive.

DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) deals with penalties and takedowns for the copyright infringement on the internet. Original publishers can file “take downs” against websites that copy their content and publish it without proper authentication. Obviously, the number of DMCA take-down requests corresponds to the number of copyright infringements that a particular website has done. This includes duplicate content and unauthorized use of properties such as images, themes, scripts and software.

The answer to Syndication Vs Duplicate content

infographic-adThis approach from Google may provide an answer to the syndication Vs Duplicate content confusion. For example if an article is syndicated to other sites without changing the attribution, we all know that it is syndication. However, there are cases where the attribution is not changed but still the content is published without obtaining any syndication permissions. In that case, the original article author could always file a takedown claiming that it was not authorized to be syndicated and hence it becomes a duplicate content. This approach would clearly differentiate duplicate content and syndicated content

Any benefit to those who protect their content with DMCA badges?
DMCA takedown request is a negative ranking factor added to the search engine algorithm. This makes everyone think if there is any SEO benefit applicable for websites that protect their unique content using the DMCA protection certificates. As of now, only Google knows. However, according to us, protecting your content with DMCA certification is one way to let the world know that your content is unique.

The overall good news is that Google has become more transparent with their algorithm updates than ever before.
